The Arts

I was able to get a bit of rest over the weekend and hopefully work won't be too crazy over the next few weeks...hmmm, somehow I don't think that is going to happen.

I don't have much to talk about regarding the Arts because I don't see much happening at the moment. But here are two exhibits you might want to catch:

Dallas Museum of Art

Gabriel Orozco: Inner Circles of the Wall -  a sculptural installation by this artist running November 29, 2007–March 30, 2008.

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Declaring Space installation focusing on the abstract work of Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko

The Art of Cookie Making

Last year we had bought an old fashioned cookie press from Crate and Barrel. I remember as a child my Aunt making these wonderful spritz butter cookies in the shape of trees and stars. Sometimes she would use food coloring to make them red or green and of course there the sugar sprinkles to top them off.

So, last night we decided to make some ourselves and it was so much fun. We also rented "Ratatouille" and started to watch that as well which kind of fit in with our theme of the night (review on that later in the week). I highly recommend making your own!

This weekend, Dec. 8 - 9, 38th Annual Candlelight Tour at Historic Village (formerly Old City Park). A way to experience the holidays as they were in 1861 and 1901. I am hoping to make it there some time over the weekend. More information can be found here.

If you are in the mood for some Holiday theatre, the Dallas Theatre Center is now showing a production of A Christmas Carol through December 24th.

The Arts

It was such a nice holiday weekend spent with friends so it has been a little hard getting back into the swing of things. (That may be partly due to waking up to a flooded closet. The plumber is coming tonight to fix the problem that has been going on for over a week now).   I hope everyone had a good weekend!

I think mostly it was because we enjoyed our time in Austin.

We took a different route to Austin to avoid I-35 traffic and it really made the 4-hour trip more enjoyable. It was also a much more picturesque, no traffic and much more relaxing drive time.

We stayed with friends that live really close to South Congress (close to a lot of cool places) and they have the most comfortable home and always make you feel right at home. We also had one of M's friends visiting with her mother from New York and I tell you, we hit it off.

One of the things we did do (along with plenty of shopping!) was visit the Blanton Museum located at the University of Texas at Austin. It was rainy and cold outside so the perfect day for admiring Art! The museum has a permanent collection comprised of works of art from Europe, the United States, and Latin America. The museum also features a changing exhibition.  One of the things I really liked about the museum was the Atrium - wonderful natural light.

I was very tempted to buy this pinhole camera kit at the museum shop but instead I will add it to my Christmas wish list!

I have also added two new museums to visit when I take my next trip to New York:

Dia:Beacon - A collection of major works of art from the 1960s to the present. Located on the Hudson River in Beacon, New York. (about an hour train ride)

The Cloisters - the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe and located in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan overlooking the Hudson River.

I will be back with news on books tomorrow!

The Arts

Last week was a bit of a blur so I am trying to get back on track with updates! The weekend was nice. My husband and I celebrated our 1st year anniversary on Sunday - although we celebrated all weekend. We opened gifts Saturday morning and I received a new Wacom Tablet to help with some of my digital creativity! I was very excited and have been learning how to use it. We went out to dinner at Shinsei Saturday night for a nice meal and had lunch with my mother on Sunday and relaxed the rest of the day. It was a really nice weekend.

On the Arts, about a week ago I went with a friend to the Pocket Sandwich Theater to see Jack the Ripper and it was a lot of fun. It reminded me that I have not been the theater is a while. I am going to check out what is going on at the local venues and report back next week.

The Arts

We went to see a movie at the Angelika on Saturday night and they showed a preview for the documentary film titled The Rape of Europa.

The film tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War.

This is definitely a film I would like to see.

The Arts

I had a good weekend. I managed to do a bit of shopping. I saw two movies I have been wanting to see and went through my closet and got rid of some clothes that were just not being worn. It felt great!

But let's catch up on some interesting things in the art world:

Banksy - controversial graphic design/grafitti artist

Indian Art World - take a peek through this article in the New York Times.

As much as I would like to see the Richard Serra sculpture exhibit in New York at the MoMA, I will have to settle for the next best thing - the online experience.  They have done a wonderful job of giving virtual tourists a way to view the exhibit online

The Arts

I can't believe it is already Monday. The weekends are never long enough, are they? And when you have a good weekend it makes it that much harder to jump back into the work week!

I spoke to my grandfather yesterday and he sounded really good. I look forward to seeing him in two weeks.

As for a few tidbits of things art related:

Susan Meiselas - there is an interesting article in the NY Times regarding this Magnum photographer. She is best known for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua and her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America. You can view more of her work here.

Artlex - an art dictionary that has definitions for more than 3,600 terms used in discussing art and visual culture, along with thousands of supporting images, pronunciation notes, great quotations and cross-references.  This one will probably come in handy!

Vistas Latino Film Festival - this will take place the week of September 19-23rd. Information should be available closer to the festival.

The Arts + Books & Literature

I had a pretty busy weekend catching up on crafty things. I finished my soldering projects for the most part - bookmark and pendant (I just need to add a jump ring to the pendant) and I even handcrafted a frame with some soldering for a friend who is entering a competition.  The frame was a fun project and something I am considering for my own photographs in the future!

I also started working on my photographs from a recent trip to museums in Fort Worth.

I had a nice weekend and it looks to be a busy week.  I am behind but hopefully catching up....

Hustler of Culture - this is a featured Tyepad blog.  Cultural happenings around cities in the U.S. and abroad.

The Arts

Mueck_3We recently had a Museum weekend in Fort Worth. I had not been there in ages and as for culture outings, ages as well. We visited the Modern Museum of Art for the Ron Mueck exhibit and to admire the building itself (architecture by Tadao Ando). We went to the Fort Museum of Science & History to see the Star Wars exhibit (yeah, I know what you are thinking! but how can you not love R2D2?!). We had a little side trip to visit The Japense Gardens at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and we ventured back over to the Kimbell for just enough time to see their permanent exhibition. We might have to go back for the Picasso exhibit a bit later on. Although the architecture of the museum is worth seeing as well.

It was nice to have a cultural day out and a nice way to spend a Saturday away from Dallas.
