Books + Literature

I finally finished The Jane Austen Book Club and I very much enjoyed it as a lighter read.

Since All Hallows Eve is tomorrow, I thought it only appropriate to post a spooky poem by none other - Lord Edgar Allen Poe:

The Haunted Palace
By E. A. Poe, ESQ.

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace —
Snow-white palace — reared its head.
In the monarch thought's dominion —
It stood there!
Never Seraph spread his pinion
Over fabric half so fair.

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow —
This — all this — was in the olden
Time long ago —
And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the rampart plumed and pallid,
A winged odour went away.

All wanderers in that happy valley,
Through two luminous windows saw
Spirits moving musically
To a lute's well tuned law,
Round about a throne where sitting
(Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well befitting,
The sovereign of the realm was seen.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door ;
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,
A troop of echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.

But evil things in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate!
Ah, let us mourn — for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!
And round about his home the glory,
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travellers now within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows, see
Vast forms that move fantastically
To a discordant melody;
While, like a rapid ghastly river,
Through the pale door;
A hideous throng rush out forever,
And laugh — but smile no more.

The Arts

We went to see a movie at the Angelika on Saturday night and they showed a preview for the documentary film titled The Rape of Europa.

The film tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War.

This is definitely a film I would like to see.

OK, so a little shameless self promotion. I decided to enter this image into one of the Theme's (Bird's Eye View) over at JPG Magazine. I have a chance in hell of it being printed but with a little help from my friends -- you never know.

As for current tunes spinning...we have been listening to the newest Band of Horses and Rogue Wave.  And I have to say that a CD I wasn't quite sure of at first has become a favorite. Go check out the album Boxer by The National.

Books + Literature

I am nearing the end of “The Jane Austen Book Club” and I hope to get back to “Hotel du Lac.”  Iliana gave me an extra copy of “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian” by Marina Lewycka for our December book club meeting (good thing as I have to return the copy I checked our from the library!). Thanks Chica!  So, that is also on my TBR pile. Not to mention all the magazines stacking up!  Good thing that tonight is no TV Tuesday (well, that is the current plan).

I came across the Modern Library’s 100 Best Novels list on their website.  It was interesting to see what is on the Board’s list compared to the Reader’s list.  I included the first 25 of the Reader’s list and you can see both lists in their entirety here.

It reminds me of some of those novels I meant to read but haven’t gotten around to. More to be added to the TBR pile and a good thing I have a $25 Amazon gift certificate to spend!

Film

I have not had the chance to get out to the cinema the past week or so but I did see on DVD the film Reign Over Me.  I was disappointed (although not completely) by a movie that could have been excellent but ended up mediocre. I think that Adam Sandler just wasn't the right person as one of the leads because I felt Don Cheadle was great. I am not sure I would recommend this film.

I currently have Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont which I think is going to be  enjoyable - I will report back.

Here are a couple of movies currently showing that I would like to see:

Into the Wild
Things we Lost in the Fire
Elizabeth - The Golden Age

Feeling behind..

Ok.  So I am a little behind as in not posting at all so far this week. I have to say that I don't seem to have a lot on my topics this week but the following:

Arts

On November 1 & 2 the Day of the Dead celebrations begin at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas.

You can read more information here.

Books & Literature

Doris Lessing won the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature.  I have had hear on my TBR pile for years.

I really should get pick up one of her books and begin that reading journey!

Music

So behind on new music. I will report more on that next week!

I definitely need to get back up to date. Movie talk tomorrow....

Random Cool

Last night we went to the new restaurant Fearing's at the Ritz Carlton.  Chef Fearing hails originally from the Mansion in Dallas and as you can imagine, the cuisine was excellent.  We chose to sit outside and it was a gorgeous night.  The ambience was very elegant - low lighting and water fountains.  The service was excellent as was every delicious bite!

Our first taste of the cuisine was a complimentary amuse bouche of hot and sour soup which had a wonderful kick. We decided to try a few things off the menu and share. We started off with recommendations of our waiter: Barbecued Shrimp Taco with Mango-Pickled Red Onion Salad and Smoky Citrus Vinaigrette. For our main course chose the Two Salads: Cider-raised Bacon with Leeks, Salsify and Golden Beets Maple-Smoked Salmon Tartare with Confit Fingerling Potatoes,Fennel and Tangerine-Mustard Vinaigrette as well as Pan-Roasted “Spiced” Filet and Chicken-Fried Maine Lobster on Queso Fresco Potatoes and Chico Spinach Enchilada. The filet was cooked to perfection!

Of course we saved room for dessert  and indulged in the Cantaloupe, Honeydew and Watermelon Sorbet with Midori Mint Sauce and Banana Cream Pie with Toasted Meringue and Coconut Ice Cream.  The Banana pie was my favorite of those dishes. I had coffee as well.

Overall it was a wonderful night, the food was excellent and even though this was five-star dining I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Chef Fearing himself visited our table during the evening to askwith another couple.

If you are looking to treat yourself, I would highly recommend this new restaurant.

Film

The most recent films I have seen...

The Brave One - I thought this was a really good film and Jodie Foster was excellent. There are a few parts that are graphically violent but I think that it helps to show the darker side of humanity. The story itself is that of a very intelligent woman whose life is seemingly charmed. The story then goes on to to show how a violent and senseless attack changes everything, including the person she once was. This is one of those films that really affects you.

The Kingdom - this was a movie I had really wanted to see but did walk out feeling a little underwhelmed. I was expecting something a little more intense and action packed. Overall, the movie was entertaining but fails to get its political message across, if there really was one at all.

The Jane Austen Book Club - I had started reading the book that this film was based on (and I still am) but went ahead and caught the film this past weekend. It was enjoyable and what I would consider a great Sunday matinee because it has that feel good factor and dishy Hugh Dancy. Just from what I have read of the book there are subtle differences but some of the dialogue is used from the book. If you are looking for a little escapism than you won't be disappointed. The movie and book does inspire me to go back and read some of the Jane Austen novels that I have missed.

These are on my "must see" list:

The Bucket List
No Country for Old Men
Grace is Gone
Atonement
Feast of Love
Trade
Reservation Road

there are plenty more but I will save those for later.....
